Application of essential oils and their bioactive compounds to the control of varroa mites in honeybees

Product introduction

European honeybees (Apis mellifera) are one of the most managed bee species, and they are known for their contribution to crop pollination and honey bee products. Apiculture industries are currently experiencing massive colony losses due to varroa mites (Varroa destructor). Over time, beekeepers have adopted several chemical treatments to control varroa mite infestations in honeybee colonies. Despite being the faster control method, chemicals are also the most hazardous to the environment, non-target species, and human health. Therefore, non-chemical options should be explored and considered. A plant-based product can be used as an alternative to control varroa mites. After conducting a series of studies, we determined that some selected plant essential oils and their bioactive compounds can effectively control varroa mites in the laboratory and in the field. Based upon the number of tests, it can be concluded that essential oils have a great potential for the varroa mites control in honeybee colonies in the field
